Establishing & Managing Commercial Dairy Farm training held at SADI
The course helped dairy farmers and potential investors get acquainted with various essential components of commercial dairy farm management and to acquire basic information to plan, establish and manage a commercial dairy farm.
Solve Agri & Dairy Institute (SADI) organized training course on “Establishing and Managing Commercial Dairy Farm” on April 26-29, 2017
The week long training course was attended by over 10 participants including farm dairy farm owners and potential investors. This training was also the continuation of SADI’s series of trainings on establishing and managing commercial dairy farm aiming to help dairy farming emerge as a profitable business. The course had an extensive focus on various issues related to commercial dairy farming including farm feasibility, management skills, feeding, breeding, housing, young-stock, health, waste management, cost price calculations etc. The course helped the participants learn the necessary functional dairy farm components including SOPs and KPIs of a commercial dairy farm and farming skills to be successful in the rapidly changing dairy farming industry. Senior trainers and resource persons having hands-on experience in the relevant fields were engaged to conduct the training while interactive and participatory mode of training also enhanced the learning process.
In order to give practical understanding, the farm excursions were also organized. Participants spent a full day at two different dairy farms including an open shed and an environment controlled shed that brought an opportunity for participants to practically observe and learn on various aspects of farm management in both types of housing systems.
The training concluded with the certificate distribution ceremony on Saturday evening. Head of Solve Agri & Dairy Institute, Dr. Muhammad Rasheed and General Manager Solve Agri Pak Dr. Waseem Shaukat were present at the occasion.
Expressing his views about the training, training participant Mr. Khuram Akram (who is a Businessman from Sialkot and is potential investor for dairy farming) said that he has been considering investing into dairy farming and for the purpose has long been looking for a platform to understand the complete details of this business. This training has substantially helped him achieve the level that he needed to be sure before making decision to go into this business. He appreciated SADI’s critical role in guiding the new comers into this business in a holistic manner where they are fully made aware of all pros and cons, opportunities and threats pertaining to this business. Another training participant Mr. Iqbal Mallhi (who is running his small dairy farm in Gujrat district) said that training has changed his approach towards dairy farming and now he is capable of transforming his business on commercial lines. He expressed his gratitude towards trainers and management at SADI for organizing such a wonderful training course. Another training participant from Muzaffargarh, Mr. Fawad Dogar (who is running his commercial dairy farm) said that the training has substantially improved his understanding towards modern dairy farming needs from an overall perspective, he has been extremely satisfied with the course contents, trainers and the way it was organized.

SADI organized feedlot fattening training on ‘Farm Construction & Mechanization’
Four days training funded by USAID Agriculture Market Development (AMD) project was organized for feedlot fattening farmers in Multan.
Solve Agri & Dairy Institute (SADI), on behalf of USAID Agriculture Market Development (AMD) Project, organized 4 days training on “Construction of Feedlot Farm & Mechanization” for the feedlot farmers on January 24-27, 2017 in Multan. The specialized training was delivered for a group of 25 participants selected from 13 feedlot fattening farms in Pakistan with an objective to enhance their knowledge and skills related to feedlot fattening. The training focused on some of the important aspects including feasibility assessment for 500 animals’ feedlot farm, site selection, housing layouts, construction and farm mechanization for medium to large scale feedlot fattening business.
The training was facilitated and delivered by Solve Agri Pak’s technical experts and trainers including Dr. Muhammad Aleem Bhatti, Eng. Jamal Yousaf, Dr. Khuram Ihsan and Dr. Muhammad Rasheed. Participants were engaged through participatory discussions, group work, exercises, demonstrations and rigorous brainstorming sessions. This helped them develop firm understanding on feedlot fattening business’s core important areas of feasibility, construction and mechanization.
The training included both in-house sessions as well as field excursions at farms. Participants also had an opportunity to analyze and discuss several aspects for setting up a feedlot farm from the beginning. Practical demonstrations of various types of machinery that can be utilized by feedlot farms were also organized. Participants took special interest in exploring and learning about various types of machinery including Total Mixed Ration (TMR) wagons, harvesters, bailors, grinders & mixers etc. An on-site briefing was also arranged on operational matters of these machines. Participants also undertook various guided assignments during the training while they also delivered group presentations on the last day. Special evening sessions with meat exporters were also arranged on daily basis to enhance linkages and strengthen value chain.
The training concluded with the appraisal and certificate distribution ceremony held at Ramada Hotel in Multan Friday afternoon. Solve Agri Pak’s General Manager Dr. Waseem Shaukat and USAID AMD’s Livestock Consultant Dr. Dilshad Hussain graced the occassion. On behalf of the training participants, Mr. Iqbal Khan from Balouch Feedlot Farm Lodhran lauded the initiative taken by AMD project and executed by Solve Agri Pak. He appreciated the training methodology adopted during the training that helped in participatory learning. He declared the course as being the first of its kind that covered crucial aspects of feasibility and beginning of the feedlot farm. The course lead trainer and Solve Agri Pak’s expert Dr. Muhammad Aleem Bhatti appreciated the participants for their keen interest and involvement throughout the training program and wished them all the best in their successful ventures in feedlot fattening.
Speaking at the occasion, USAID AMD’s Livestock Consultant Dr. Dilshad Hussain said that the course was first among a series of training courses planned by AMD project for capacity building of feedlot farmers in Pakistan. He appreciated Solve Agri Pak’s team for successful execution of the first training course and anticipated that this training will add value in feedlot farming in the country. Solve Agri Pak’s General Manager Dr. Waseem Shaukat extended his gratitude to the USAID Agriculture Market Development project for providing this opportunity to Solve Agri Pak for organizing and conducting training courses for feedlot farmers. He said that feedlot fattening was a new concept in the country and had been slowly gaining momentum these days. Solve Agri Pak as the leading one-stop solution provider for livestock, dairy and related agriculture sectors has always been at the fore-front in new initiatives in livestock sector. This first and unique training, which will be followed by several other topics, will pave the road to success for feedlot farming industry in Pakistan, he said.

Mastitis Management Can Reduce Losses and Improve Profits at Dairy Farms
Mastitis Management seminar was organized in Lahore for awareness of dairy farmers about mastitis and its management.
As a part of Solve Agri & Dairy Institute’s awareness programs for dairy sector, a seminar on “Mastitis Management” was organized. This seminar was organized in Lahore in collaboration with Solve Agri Pak (Private) Limited and CID Lines. It was attended by a large number of key stakeholders from dairy sector including corporate & commercial dairy farmers, public and private sector institutions, dairy development & extension services organizations. Mr. Ronny Schelfhout from CID Lines presented in details about mastitis management, including its impact and strategies to manage mastitis at dairy farms to reduce losses.
Solve Agri Pak also launched in collaboration with CID Lines a unique mastitis management program for Pakistan dairy farmers at this occasion. Solve Agri Pak’s General Manager Dr. Waseem Shaukat outlined the key highlights of this mastitis management program and informed that partner farms under this program will be helped in managing mastitis & reducing losses through a unique set of tools, services and products.
Efficient Dairy Farm Management training held at SADI
The course helped dairy sector professionals and farmers to identify and sort-out attention points for improving efficiency of dairy farming
Solve Agri & Dairy Institute (SADI) organized training course on “Efficient Dairy Farm Management” on October 24-28, 2016. The week long training course was attended by 14 participants from Punjab and Sindh. The group included participants from Doctor’s Dairies & Feeds Karachi, Engro Foods Limited, Engro Dairy Farm Nara (Sukkar), besides various commercial farm owners and managers. Training emphasized on improving efficiency in dairy farming business from various aspects including feeding, breeding, housing, young-stock etc. Special attention was given to Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure efficient dairy operation.
The training also included two days hands-on learning at the dairy farms. Participants got an opportunity to practically observe various farm operation and they were able to identify bottlenecks hindering efficiency. Senior trainers and experts with relevant experience were engaged to impart training in order to ensure maximum exchange of knowledge and skills. Participants also visited controlled shed as well as open shed housing system to evaluate performance of both system.
Course concluded with certificate distribution ceremony on Friday. Solve Agri Pak’s General Manager Dr. Waseem Shaukat and renowned livestock & agriculture specialist Mr. Hafiz Wasi Muhammad Khan were present at the occasion. In their feedback, training participants appreciated the course saying that course has helped them in improving their concept and experience of dairy farming in efficient manner. One of the participants from Engro Dairy Farm, Dr. Toufeeq while appreciated the course for its wonderful significance for commercial dairy farmers, emphasized the need to organize further advance courses exclusively for the corporate dairy farmers in order to remove bottlenecks at corporate dairy farms. Another participant, Mr. Bilal Mehdi said that he has been extremely satisfied with the course contents, trainers and the way it was organized.
In his address, Mr. Hafiz Wasi Muhammad Khan urged the participants to stay focused in their approach. He said that dairy farming can not succeed without passionate involvement of the owners as well as staff working at the farm. He congratulated participants on completing their course at SADI.

Solve Agri & Dairy Institute (SADI) organized training course on “Introduction to Modern Dairy Farm Management” on August 22-26, 2016. The week long training course was attended by over 15 participants from various parts of the country. The group included participants from Doctor’s Dairies & Feeds Karachi, Maxim International Lahore and Agri-Vet Services along with a number of existing dairy farm owners and potential investors who intend to establish dairy farms in near future. This training was also the continuation of SADI’s series of trainings on modern dairy farm management aiming to help dairy farming emerge as a profitable business. The course had an extensive focus on various issues related to modern dairy farming including farm feasibility, management skills, feeding, breeding, housing, youngstock, health, waste management and economics. A special emphasis was also given on standard operating procedures (SOPs) and the key performance indicators (KPIs) that plays a vital role in success of a dairy farm. Senior trainers and resource persons having hands-on experience in the relevant fields were engaged to conduct the training while interactive and participatory mode of training also enhanced the learning process.

Another training participant from Karachi, Dr. Khalid Kaim Khani, who is Director Business Development at Doctor’s Dairies & Feeds said that he has been into this field for last twenty years, yet learning never stops. He said that his organization was feeling gaps in their team to properly address the changing needs of the customers and hence decided to equip the team with modern knowledge and skills for providing services to the farmers. He appreciated the training contents and said that this course has made a huge difference for himself and his team members who have attended the course. This will help us in better addressing and responding to market needs in future, he said.

SADI Organized Training on Efficient Milk Collection Practices
Solve Agri & Dairy Institute organized two days customized training on “Efficient Milk Collection Practices” for milk collection staff of Haleeb Foods Limited. The two days training was organized at Haleeb Foods’s plant in Bhai Pheru attended by 25 key personnels from Milk Collection & Dairy Services department. The two days training emphasized on hygienic milk collection and handling in efficient manner. The training, based on participatory approach, covered various important aspects of quality milk collection, including Developing dairy services – connecting with farmers, Hygienic milk collection from farm to factory, Efficient milk collection & handling, Evaluating potential pockets for milk collection & establishing milk collection network, Factors affecting quality of milk, Equipment maintenance & CIP practices, Achieving low bacterial count in raw milk, Professional ethics etc.
The training concluded with the certificate distribution ceremony chaired by Mr. Haroon Lodhi, Chief Operating Officer of Haleeb Foods Limited. Present at the occasion were also Dr. Waseem Shaukat (General Manager, Solve Agri Pak), Mr. Faisal Nisar (Head of Milk Collection & Dairy Services, Haleeb Foods), Dr. Imdad Ali Daudpota (Manager Operations Milk Collection & Dairy Services, Haleeb Foods) and Dr. Muhammad Rasheed (Incharge, Solve Agri & Dairy Institute).

Dairy Nutrition & Feeding Management Training Concluded at SADI
Lahore (May 7, 2016): Three days training course on Dairy Nutrition & Feeding Management has successfully concluded at Solve Agri & Dairy Institute in Lahore. The intensive training course was attended by 19 participants from all across Pakistan, aiming to understand science of dairy nutrition and learn the art of feeding management at the dairy farms. The course concluded with the participatory appraisal and certificate distribution ceremony today afternoon. Solve Agri Pak’s General Manager Dr. Waseem Shaukat chaired the concluding session. Present at the occasion were also Market Development Manager of Pioneer Pakistan Seeds Limited Mr. Ghulam Mustafa and Solve Agri Pak’s Sales & Business Development Manager Mr. Khuram Ihsan among others.
Sharing his feedback one of the participants, Dr. Abdul Ghafoor who is Territory Milk Manager at Haleeb Foods, said that the course has been extremely helpful in developing practical understanding of the how dairy animals should be fed. He said that SADI should offer courses with longer duration for more learning. Another participant, Dr. Roman Saghar – Dairy Specialist at Pioneer Seeds said that facilitators had made the course extremely interactive and participatory due to which boring topics like calculations and ration balancing proved to be easy for understanding and practising. He emphasized the need of such training courses quite frequently for enhancing professional competence. ICI Pakistan’s Regional Manager Mr. Virk said that interaction and participatory learning is what he will always remember about this course. He appreciated the course trainers for their supportive and interactive approach that has helped in effective learning. He stressed that SADI should continue engaging organizations like ICI and others for their staff’s capacity building as this is the need of the hour. While sharing his experiences another participant from Karachi, Mr. Anil – Marketing Manager of Doctor’s Dairies & Feeds said that this course has proved to be game changer for him in understanding the gross route level facts behind feeding in dairy animals. He said that the course has helped him in being better prepared to deal with their customers.
The guest of honor Mr. Ghulam Mustafa of Pioneers Seeds lauding Solve Agri & Dairy Institute said that SADI is first and only institute in Pakistan that offers unique hands-on learning opportunity for in-service professionals in livestock sector. Refresher Training Session for Nestle DDEs organized
A refresher training session was organized for Dairy Development Executives (DDEs) of Nestle Pakistan Limited at Pindi Bhattian on 27 April, 2016 under Pakistan Dairy Supply Chain Development Project funded by World Bank / International Finance Corporation. More than 15 DDEs from different regions participated in the session organized jointly by VetEffect Netherlands and Solve Agri Pak at Nestle Regional Milk Collection Centre Pindi Bhattian and a nearby commercial dairy farm. Solve Agri Pak’s General Manager Dr. Waseem Shaukat and Commercial Manager Asif Ashfaq were also present at this occassion. Solve Agri Pak’s Capacity Building Manager Dr. Muhammad Rasheed giving a recap highlighted the objective of the session and said that following the DDEs training in January this year, a comprehensive plan has been prepared to support the commercial dairy farmers with involvement of international and national experts along with Nestle’s DDEs.
The international expert Mr. Jim Burrell emphasized that DDEs has got an important role to play in enhancing milk production at the selected commercial dairy farms, one of the key objectives of Pakistan Dairy Supply Chain Development Project. He gave the DDEs field assignment on effectively analysing a dairy farm and preparing improvement strategy in light of the observations. He talked about various aspects of dairy farm and how can one effectively assess the situation of a particular dairy farm. Later the participants moved to a nearby commercial dairy farm, Chohan Dairies, where they undertook the guided assignment. Mr. Jim Burrell and Mr. Khuram Ihsan from Solve Agri Pak briefed the DDEs about various aspects of the dairy farm analysis and helped them in farm assessment.
It is worth mentioning that VetEffect Netherlands and Solve Agri Pak are jointly implementing Pakistan Dairy Supply Chain Development Project funded by World Bank / IFC for Nestle Pakistan Limited. Under this project, 40 DDEs have already been trained in two phases (November 2015 and January 2016) while in next two years 200 commercial dairy farms will be supported for enhancing milk production.
